Care Packages for Foster Children

on 31 May 2016

Turning Points for Children places between 25 and 35 children in Foster Care Homes each month.  The situation is often dire as children are removed from their homes because of neglect, the care takers inability to cope, sexual abuse, inadequate housing (such as no heat or water), parent incarceration or other grim situations. Our agency helps locate homes for children who have been dropped off a local hospital emergency room and police stations by parents who no longer want them and teenagers who refuse to go back home because of sexual abuse.

Since children leave their homes quickly and because many of them have so little to begin with, Turning Points is starting a program to provide care packages or “Comfort Cases” to be given to the foster child the same day that he or she enters into a new home with a foster family. The cases will be distributed by Turning Points Case Workers in duffle bags since most of the kids have no luggage. Bags will be designed to serve different age groups and genders.  Turning Points will monthly volunteer events to help organize the cases for distribution.
